How did you become a general manager?
By being interested in all aspects of the hotel business. During my career I have worked in different departments in leadership positions, such as front office, revenue management and sales. Gaining experience in different cities around the globe, such as Dubai, Hong Kong, Honolulu, Bucharest and Warsaw, and working with different cultures helped me prepare to become a general manager.
What’s the best part of the job?
The interaction with our international guests and the hotel staff. If guests enjoy their stay, they will come back. Guests’ requirements are constantly evolving, therefore it is important to understand their needs and then work with the hotel team to adjust service delivery, stay ahead and surpass expectations. This includes small adjustments such as ensuring we have vegan menu options in our new restaurant, Renaissance Gallery, as well as supporting new Marriott International innovations such as Meetings Imagined, a completely new approach to planning and delivering successful meetings. Every day there is something new to learn and discover, which keeps my job interesting and enjoyable.
Which is your favourite area of the hotel?
There are many. Between July 2014 and March 2015, the hotel was completely renovated. The lobby, restaurant, bar, meeting and guest rooms have an updated fresh and modern look. A newly equipped rooftop gym allows guests to work out while enjoying a great view of the city. Our summer terrace, next to the restaurant, is a fantastic place to enjoy a cool drink. I think it is important as a general manager to regularly have a look at all the different parts of the hotel and see them from a guest’s perspective ‒ and constantly to improve our product.
What is the most common request from guests?
Whether guests are here on business or for a city break, they often want to discover the city and really experience it. Therefore we offer them local recommendations at the Navigator desk in the lobby. Members of staff provide tips on their own discoveries so our guests get great insider knowledge of Düsseldorf.
How do you keep up with current trends?
We are living in a digital age, and of course Marriott keeps up with current trends worldwide. We try to make communication with our team as easy as possible. For example, meeting planners can share their wishes with us without having to leave the meeting room by using the meeting services app. If you’re a Marriott Rewards Member you can easily use our mobile check in and check out. We like to be the best host for our guests, and it is important to us to understand their changing needs.
What are your Düsseldorf must-sees?
Düsseldorf is a fascinating city. Situated on the banks of the Rhine, it’s the chosen venue for 40 international trade fairs in addition to world-class museums and high-ranking sports and music events. Düsseldorf offers visitors a splendid journey full of discovery and pleasure. Of course, you must visit the Old Town with its well-known breweries. Königsallee, the famous shopping street, is a must-see as well. Luckily, the Renaissance Düsseldorf Hotel is very conveniently located between the city centre, the Old Town, the exhibition and congress centre and the international airport, making it a great starting point for a city tour.
Which restaurants would you direct guests to?
Of course, my first choice is our own restaurant, Renaissance Gallery. It is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The weekday lunch menu, including a drink and coffee-to-go, is just €8.20. At weekends, you can enjoy brunch, a candlelight dinner and more. There’s also a seasonal menu. The summer terrace is definitely worth a visit. How are your guest rooms special?
The Renaissance brand gives a local touch to each individual hotel. ‘Live Life to Discover …’ is our motto and we invite guests to discover something wonderfully new. This journey really begins in the guest rooms. Take a look at the incorporated Düsseldorf elements; the curtains and lampshades show the skyline of Düsseldorf. Our guests should come into their room and feel comfortable. All of our rooms are extra large and fitted with soundproof windows, air-conditioning and large beds to help guests relax.
Do you have any regular events?
We like to interact with our guests, so we offer events twice a week. Everyone is welcome to attend them. Our goal is for our guests feel at home and discover something new during every stay. Cooking classes, sushi workshops, cocktail lessons and more are offered at reasonable prices. Is it easy to arrange meetings?
Of course. We offer 11 meeting rooms with room sizes between 27 square metres and 395 square metres. The Renaissance Düsseldorf Hotel can accommodate events for up to 520 people. Interactive coffee breaks, a great atmosphere and tailored service by our experienced team ensure that every event will be a success. Guests who are interested can arrange a site inspection.
