I live in Munich and feel at home here. Even if money were no object, I would choose Munich. It is a very charming city, with magnificent architecture.
Where do you relax?
I enjoy the laid-back style of the Bavarian people and the huge old part of the Englischer Garten, which is perfect for morning walks with my dog.
Munich is a great holiday destination for both summer and winter, with its lovely lakes and the beautiful Alps just around the corner. I am also fond of the traditional costumes, the classic dirndl and lederhosen, especially at the famous Oktoberfest.
Where do you shop?
My favourite stores in Munich are Ansary, for beautiful lingerie and beachwear, the small Britta Peters concept store, which stocks extraordinary objects, and Harry Beyer Kunst und Antiqutäten, which takes you on an exciting journey into the past. I recently discovered the Autorenbuchhandlung bookstore – a real dream for book-lovers like me.
Where do you eat?
For very good Italian cuisine, I like to go to Hippocampus, where dogs are also welcome! 181 First offers a fantastic view over Munich from the revolving restaurant on top of the television tower, with excellent cuisine to match. I usually take out-of-town friends to the famous Franziskaner, an authentic, vibrant Bavarian restaurant with fantastic regional food like leberkäs [meat pâté], schweinebraten [roast pork] and kraut [cabbage].
Where do you go at the weekend?
My favourite walk in the city is at the Englischer Garten, from the stauwehr [weir] to a popular biergarten called Aumeister, where you can get all kinds of beers, traditional Bavarian brezn [pretzels] and smoked fish called steckerlfisch.
My favourite view in the city is from the old city tower called Alter Peter. There is a never-ending flight of stairs to the top, but the view on a clear sunny day is breathtaking. You can even see the Alps.
What’s the best-kept local secret?
It has to be a fish lunch at Poseidon, at the wonderful Viktualienmarkt local marketplace. I also love the patio inside the Glyptothek museum – it’s perfect for relaxing in the shade on hot summer days. I am most likely to be found at Viktualienmarkt, I love to cook!
