As Germany’s second-largest city, Hamburg offers some of best Christmas markets in the country. Famous for its food markets all-year round, Hamburg showcases an impressive selection of Christmas markets over the festive season. The Rathausmarkt – city hall market – is arguably the most popular and, located in front of the beautiful city hall building, complete with a large illuminated tree, it is also one of the most striking. Winterwald, in the central Mönckebergbrunnen area, and the Weisserzauber Christmas Market on Jungfernstieg are also popular festive destinations.

27 November-23 December 2017, Rathausmarkt

Located in front of Hamburg’s city hall, this historical Christmas market is one of the most popular locations in the city. This picturesque place provides an atmospheric setting to shop for handcrafted Christmas decorations, gingerbread cookies, sweets and other souvenirs, and visitors will also find stalls selling hot food and delicious glühwein – mulled wine.

3 November-3 December 2017, Winterdom
The biggest public fair in northern Germany gets a festive makeover for winter, with the arrival of Winterdom on the 3 November. Held three times a year, the funfair offers a huge array of attractions, rides and delicious food for the whole family. This year the farm-themed winter market will offer wooden cottages, fire-lit seating areas and traditional hot food and drinks, perfect for warming up in the cold. With charming carousels, baked delights and top rides, there is something for everyone.

27 November-30 December, Weisserzauber auf dem Jungfernstieg
The Weisserzauber market is located on the Jungfernstieg urban promenade in the heart of the city. The market offers plenty to see and do, with traditional craft stalls showcasing unique Christmas gifts; hot food stalls, selling international dishes such as Dutch pancakes, German biscuits and crepes; and a wide range of hot drinks available, from mulled wine to eggnog and hot chocolate. This Christmas market is a fantastic place to pick up some local handmade gifts and lovely souvenirs.

27 November-23 December, Gänsemarkt
Small and atmospheric, the Gänsemarkt invites guests to revel in winter festivities at this cosy Christmas market. Located in Gänsemarkt square, the market is a lovely place to while away a frosty evening and warm up with a selection of traditional drinks and delicious bites to eat. Located just a short walk away from the central town square and the Jungfernstieg promenade, this is a great place to stop for a pre-dinner drink.

27 November-30 December, Bergedorf Wichtelmarkt

What could be more atmospheric then a Christmas market at Bergedorf castle, located on the river Bille. Surrounded by a moat and held in the castle grounds, the market is a great alternative to the bright lights and rides of Winterdom. The castle dates back to the 14th century and the Wichtelmarkt offers an elegant, charming place to shop for handmade gifts, sip mulled wine and listen to Christmas songs. The peaceful destination also offers a large children’s tent, perfect for keeping little ones entertained.
