When looking for a luxury watch, it will probably be famous Swiss brands that come to mind. However, browse the luxurious boutiques of Frankfurt and it soon becomes clear that Germany’s watchmakers are up there with the best, creating some of the finest timepieces on the market.

Germany’s watchmakers are up there with the best, creating some of the finest timepieces on the market

In the east of the country, specifically in and around the town of Glashütte in Saxony, some of Germany’s finest minds are building on the country’s unrivalled engineering and design heritage, constantly pushing the boundaries in the world of luxury watches.

Bearing the name of the town in which it was founded, Glashütte Original is one of Germany’s premier watchmakers. For 2018 the brand has introduced two new timepieces, both available from Wempe and Bucherer stores in Frankfurt.

Unveiled at last year’s famous Baselworld watch show, the Glashütte Original Senator Chronograph Panorama Date is one of the brand’s most striking new additions. A deep black dial is contrasted with white print and radiant blue Super-LumiNova hands and Roman numerals, providing excellent legibility in the dark. The model has a beautifully polished and satin-brushed stainless-steel case, and a choice of three bracelets including a luxurious black calfskin with blue thread chosen to match the Super-LumiNova markings on the face.

The new Zeitmeister Sport Diver’s Chronograph Bronze is inspired by Wempe’s long history of links to the seafaring world

The second new Glashütte Original model for 2018 is the Senator Excellence Perpetual Calendar. Building on the classic features and timeless, sophisticated look of the brand’s popular Excellence line, the watch features a new movement, guaranteeing precise presentation of date, day and month – even taking leap years into account – while perfectly marrying ease of service and user-friendliness. Featuring a 42mm diameter case in either satin-polished stainless steel or red gold, and either a black or brown Louisiana alligator leather bracelet, the newest addition to the Excellence line is an elegant choice in any combination.

Another prestigious Glashütte-based watchmaker is A Lange & Söhne. Founded in 1845, the brand is one of Germany’s most historic watchmakers, and owes its longevity in part to a commitment to constant innovation. For 2018 it has a whole new series of watches, available from Wempe and Bucherer stores in Frankfurt.

Wempe is one of Germany’s finest watchmakers. At its luxurious boutique you’ll also find timepieces from some of the world’s leading brands

The new Blue Series consists of the Lange 1, Lange 1 Daymatic, Saxonia and Saxonia Automatic models, all featuring a combination of deep blue and solid silver dials and an exquisite white-gold case. Inspired by the use of the colour blue in art – from the skies in the works of Leonardo da Vinci to Picasso’s famous Blue Period – the deep hue of the dials, coupled with matching hand-stitched alligator leather straps, creates a sophisticated alternative to traditional timepieces in gold or silver with black or brown straps.

Leading German label Wempe, which has three boutiques in Frankfurt, introduces a bold new addition for 2018: the Zeitmeister Sport Diver’s Chronograph Bronze. Wempe’s watchmaking traditions have been closely linked with international seafaring, with precise ship’s clocks, often cast in bronze, being manufactured by Wempe for decades. Combining these connections with the brand’s horological heritage, the new model has been designed to evoke nautical instruments of the past.

The Baume & Mercier Clifton Club Shelby® Cobra Bucherer Blue Editions is as technically complex as its name is long

A solid bronze case and bezel bring to mind the propellers and bells of ships, while the modern gold-plated hour markers and hands and a colour-coordinated full-cut alligator strap mark this out as a timepiece for today’s man. Wempe’s Diver’s watches are the first certified German chronometers for diving; this striking version is limited to just 100 pieces.

Bucherer may not be local, but its boutique on Frankfurt’s Kaiserstrasse is nonetheless one of the city’s leading destinations for fine watches and jewellery. This year, the Swiss brand celebrates the launch of the 16th model in its Blue Editions line, the Baume & Mercier Clifton Club Shelby® Cobra Bucherer Blue Editions. Featuring Bucherer’s signature blue face, this sports timepiece is as technically complex and artistically accomplished as its name is long. It is inspired by the design and power of the Shelby Cobra racing car from the 1960s; the rotor inside the watch’s movement is modelled after the spokes of car wheels, while the sub dials and the second hand incorporate the classic car’s stripes and cobra logo, invoking the racing spirit of the era. Exclusive to Bucherer boutiques, it is a limited-edition piece of which only 100 have been made.

The timepiece is limited to 100 pieces and available only at Bucherer’s own boutiques

With a mix of new models inspired by artistic use of colour, racing history and nautical heritage, the city’s world-class watch specialists are the perfect venues in which to pick up a truly exemplary timepiece on your trip to Frankfurt.
