The best cafés and coffee spots in Germany

The first of October is International Coffee Day, which seems the perfect excuse to indulge in an excellent cup or two. In Germany, coffee is taken seriously, and so is café culture. Not only will our selection of the coolest coffee spots guarantee you a delicious brew, they are also fantastic places to sit down for a bite to eat: just what you need to refresh you during a busy trip exploring a new city

Hannah Lewis,

Germany is home to a host of amazing restaurants, from Michelin-starred eateries to more casual dining joints that have revolutionised the way we think about fast food-style dishes. Sometimes, however, you may be looking for an alternative to a traditional sit-down meal. Perhaps you want to grab a snack to eat on the go as you explore a new city; you could be searching for a bite to eat with your lunchtime coffee; or maybe you just want a slice of really good cake. Whatever you’re hungry for, Germany’s cafés, delicatessens and bakeries have it covered.

We’ve travelled the length and breadth of the nation to select nine of the most welcoming, original and delicious venues in Germany’s biggest cities. From the Frankfurt bakery that’s taking bread back to basics to the Düsseldorf café that encourages us all to have a second slice of cake, these are some of the must-visit foodie spots in Germany.
