If you’re looking for a stylish retreat away from the hustle and bustle of central Berlin, Patrick Hellmann Schlosshotel is a perfect choice. A 1914 palace, it is set in the leafy district of Grunewald and is a hidden gem. It was acquired by German fashion designer Patrick Hellmann in 2014 and is one of the only independently owned five-star hotels in Berlin. Behind the wonderfully glamorous façade of this historic building, the hotel is currently undergoing a huge renovation project to bring the interior (previously designed by Karl Lagerfeld after the property opened as a hotel in the 1990s) bang up to date in true Patrick Hellmann style.
Each of the hotel’s 43 rooms and 10 suites is unique and is named after colours and different destinations special to Hellmann. Decor ranges from bright white and blue in the Marbella room to striking dark grey in the London suite. All rooms feature works of art created by the designer or selected by him. The hotel’s grand lobby, lounge and beautiful chandeliered restaurant offer a wealth of places to relax, unwind and experience the sheer stylishness of this hidden oasis. The tranquil indoor pool, Jacuzzi, sauna and spa offer further respite from Berlin’s hectic centre, while the state-of-the-art fitness studio and running tracks through Grunewald forest present ideal opportunities to burn off the culinary indulgences offered by the hotel.
In the evening, the GQ Bar (in partnership with the Condé Nast magazine GQ) is the place to be seen. It is the first such bar Europe and one of only two in the world ‒ alongside the GQ Bar at JW Marriott Marquis hotel in Dubai. Dark and glamorous, the sumptuous interior features Patrick Hellmann’s favourite shade of dark purple as well as fabrics from his collections, from the pinstriped curtains to the croc-effect chairs. A cocktail menu with highlights including the GQ Bar Manhattan and the Electric Mule capture the old-school glamour of the establishment, while the black winter truffle fries make for the perfect late-night snack. If one elegant eating and drinking establishment isn’t enough then come again next year, when Germany’s first Vogue Café will also open in the hotel, attracting a fashion set from around the globe.
When it comes to fashion credentials, the hotel’s offering is impressive. The Patrick Hellmann collection for men and women is displayed throughout the building, and the hotel’s Rolls-Royce Ghost will take you straight to the Patrick Hellmann boutique in the heart of stylish Charlottenburg (a drive of just eight minutes). If you’re truly pushed for time then the store’s expert tailors can come to you, providing suit measuring and fitting in your hotel room. North-east of the Patrick Hellmann store is Kurfürstendamm, offering some of the best shopping in Berlin. With Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Prada lining the wide road, Kurfürstendamm is the perfect place to indulge in an afternoon of shopping 10 minutes from the idyllic quiet of the Patrick Hellmann Schlosshotel.
