How to wear SS17 trends
We take a look at the best trends for SS17, as seen on fashion’s biggest street-style stars. From the most coveted accessories to top shoe trends and the new way to style your coat, our guide will give you tips on how to wear the biggest trends for spring/summer 2017
Slogan T-shirts were one of the most street-style friendly trends to emerge from the spring/summer 2017 catwalks, with plenty of designers offering different interpretations of the modern tee. The Gucci logo T-shirt in particular has become an instant street-style sensation and creative director Alessandro Michele has redesigned the cult piece for the brand’s AW17 collection. Keep on-trend and team your T-shirt with a padded bomber jacket, tailored trousers and chic oversized earrings for a fresh and elegant look.
Pink was undoubtedly the colour of the season. SS17 collections explored femininity and romance with hues ranging from shocking Schiaparelli pink to fuchsia, blush and rose. Valentino and Balenciaga showed that every wardrobe needs a pink dress this season but if the thought of an all-pink outfit is too much for you, why not opt for a statement accessory or signature coat?
Shrobing is the latest way to wear your coat for SS17. The term was coined by Vogue and is short for shoulder-robing – no longer restricted to shirts and tops, off-the-shoulder styling has now spread to outerwear. The new quirk has been seen on and off the catwalk, highlighting a top new trend for the season. It is one of the most chic ways to wear your coat of choice so layer up for a more practical approach and, as this look is all about the shoulders, be sure to go hands-free with your accessories.
Small handbags remained the key accessory for SS17, with all four fashion cities showcasing downsized handbag creations and miniature versions. From minitrunks to pouches and satchels, these small pieces aren’t short on style. The trend is perhaps a little less practical than larger versions, but this season is all about streamlining to carry just the essentials. Many pieces have jewellery-like qualities, making these microbags the ideal night-time accessory.
Many designers made a case for corsets as the must-have accessory for SS17. This quirky look was updated for a modern audience with careful styling – traditionally used to accentuate the waist, here corsets gave structure to masculine tailoring. Layer this piece on top of shirts, wool coats and jacquard dresses, or why not wear over a slogan T-shirt or sweatshirt for a fresh take on the street-style look?
Showcasing a ladylike and elegant aesthetic, kitten heels have been given an update this season by brands such as Dior, JW Anderson and Céline. The low-heeled shoes have replaced stilettos and trainers as the style of the moment, with numerous street-style bloggers and fashionistas adopting the trend. Stylish, functional and highly versatile, kitten heels can be worn with everything from tailored trousers to midi-length skirts and dresses, and are set to be a big trend for SS17.
The Orient is often a popular source of inspiration for designers when it comes to spring/summer collections. For SS17, designers looked to the East, permeating their collections with subtle oriental touches. Many ensembles featured colour piping, silk robes and mandarin collars, creating a fresh and elegant finish. In London, many street-style stars emulated the trend with oversized silk shirts in bold patterns – the perfect day-to-night piece.
