Fashion buyers’ guide to PFW AW18

This Paris Fashion Week the high-end French houses ruled the runways, with their focus on separates, colour, ‘It’ bags and powerfully glamorous looks that buyers said chimed with booming stock markets and an upbeat, global focus on the business of luxury. Here department store and boutique buyers discuss their favourite collections

Alison Farrington,

Recurring brand favourites for buying directors from Europe’s top department stores were Saint Laurent, Valentino, Givenchy, Balenciaga, Alexander McQueen, Isabel Marant and Chloé. Major trends for the autumn/winter 2018/19 season ahead included power dressing with the focus on big shoulders, multiple or layered outerwear, an abundance of faux fur and pops of colour.

Designers’ use of colour was a major trend for Harvey Nichols’ head of womenswear buying Hazel Catterall, who praised the diverse colour palette in Paris. She especially noted Valentino’s block colour looks and the bold primary tones at Alexander McQueen.

New talent in Paris came from winners of the LVMH Prize for young designers, especially Marine Serre, who won the award last year, and current shortlisted designers Rokh and Magda Butrym.
