Christian Dior was the most talked-about show of Paris Haute Couture Week as it marked the debut of Belgian designer Raf Simons. Since losing John Galliano, Dior has brought in the former Jil Sander head to steer the label in a fashion-forward direction.
Celebrities such as Olivia Palermo and Sharon Stone and well-known designers from Donatella Versace to Louis Vuitton’s lead designer Marc Jacobs attended the fashion show of the moment. Other guests included US Vogue editor Anna Wintour and magazine editor-turned-author Carine Roitfeld. The A-list guests were ushered into a circular room divided into flowered themes for Simons’ Dior debut.
The mood was dark and severe at the start of the show, with simple, classic, black tailored suits and over-the-knee dresses. To lighten the mood, sharper colours were introduced with a statement scarlet dress coat which wowed the crowd, while the spring pastels seen at Raf Simons’ final Jil Sander autumn/winter 12 collection also made an appearance in peplum-shaped long dresses.
Dior prints were not left behind, as Simons utilised tie-dye style prints and polka dot patterns against his elegant silhouettes for a modern twist on classic Dior.
To play up the peplum, the night-time collection featured high waists and petticoat-lined long skirts in floral patterns, paying tribute to the blooming flower-garden surroundings of the fashion-forward new Dior haute couture collection.
