City Guide
Ashlee Beard,

What is the best thing about Lappeenranta?
Lake Saimaa for its surroundings, the scenery is just beautiful.

What are your favourite Lappeenranta restaurants?
I often meet my friends at Cafe Majurska on Kristiinankatu for coffee and cakes – I especially love its apple pie and custard. The Prinsessa Armaada near the fortress is a favourite for dinner and drinks during the summer and Tassos on Valtakatu serves great Greek dishes.

Can you recommend any local dishes?
Vety, a traditional Lappeenranta dish. It’s a meat wrap with boiled egg and ham.

Where do you go for a night out?
The Old Cock on Valtakatu if I’m in the mood for a little live rock music. If my friends and I feel like dancing the night away we head to the Giggling Marlin on Oksasenkatu, where they play everything from disco to Suomipop.

What are Lappeenranta’s best attractions?
Saimaa canal, the harbour and the fortress, which was built in 1649.

Which Finnish person do you most admire?
Our president, Tarja Halonen.

Any advice for visitors to Lappeenranta?
If it’s summertime, you should go to the harbour and take a cruise on lake Saimaa. It takes only few hours. Once you’re back on land, go and grab a delicious vety!
