1. Manly Beach
Manly is one of the city’s most popular beaches for a reason. Aside from its crystal-clear waters, it offers picturesque coastal walks, serene bays and plenty of cafés and bars. Walk around the headland to Shelly Beach, a pretty, peaceful cove with golden sand.

2. Camp Cove
Despite its prime position next to the Sydney Harbour National Park, Camp Cove has managed to retain its sleepy, unspoilt atmosphere. The beach offers magnificent views of North Head. The South Head Heritage Trail, a cliff top walk with incredible views, begins here and comes highly recommended.

3. Palm Beach
One of Sydney’s northernmost beaches, Palm Beach is a 50-minute drive from the city centre, but it’s well worth the trip. Walkers will enjoy a stroll to the historic Barrenjoey Lighthouse. Nearby Barrenjoey Head is a favourite with surfers and there’s also a protected swimming area with a 35-metre ocean pool.

4. Clovelly Beach
While its rocky surroundings are not picture-perfect, Clovelly is a small and peaceful beach that’s particularly good for swimming - and the sea-water pool is perfect for children.

5. Coogee Beach
Just 20 minutes from the city centre, Coogee’s idyllic setting and excellent surfing, snorkelling and scuba-diving conditions make it a must-visit. Follow the six-kilometre coastal walk from Bondi to Coogee and reward yourself with a picnic on the beach.

6. Balmoral Beach
Balmoral’s mansions and yachts lend some glitz and glamour to Sydney’s coastline. Activities such as rollerblading, biking and football are welcome but there’s also a lovely promenade that’s perfect for a gentle sunset stroll.
