Following on from our last visit to Mitsukoshi Nihombashi’s prestigious made-to-order salon, finessing the craft of bespoke tailoring is a journey that requires years of training and practice. In Mitsukoshi’s case, a bespoke tailoring service has been more than 100 years in the making. When clients visit the salon they are assured that they are in the hands of master pattern cutters and tailors whose every hand-stitch has been through the same judicious assessment as the generation before them. These are treasured skills and Mitsukoshi’s partnership with Bunka Fashion College, Tokyo’s distinguished fashion school, ensures that there are new apprentices waiting in the wings who are ready to take on the challenge.
The perfect suit
Each consultation with the team begins by establishing the scene for the suit; everything, from the peak of formality right through to office and summer suits, is well catered for. Then the fit is taken. There is no specific house cut; rather, the aim is to meet the fit the customer has specified so that the suit is perfectly tailored to the individual. Sizing is conducted in a number of ways taking into account pockets, their positioning, depth and whether they are likely to be used. Also important is the exact lie of the belt and any other detail the discerning client has in mind. The end product is composed of the world’s finest fabrics and natural materials. It is a labour of love to treasure, representing a collaboration between client and tailor never repeated in exactly the same way.
