Essential item: the trench coat

Designed in 1850, the trench coat can justifiably be called a classic. Originally part of the uniform for soldiers serving on the front line, nowadays cool women and preppy Brits flaunt it on the catwalk and on the streets

In terms of the history of the trench coat, the very first designs came from Aquascutum in 1850, while the Burberry trench dates back to 1895 and its invention of gabardine, the water-repellent material from which the coat is made. Today, British heritage brand Burberry is synonymous with this transitional coat, which is a wardrobe staple.

Fashion brands have succeeded in coming up with endless variations on the classic design. The coats can be found in a wide range of colours, including yellow ochre or bright red by Ted Baker. And there are no rules when it comes to length: Ted Baker’s shorter models are practical for bike riding, but this autumn’s ankle-length version is also on-trend.

From A to B in style
The all-time favourite continues to be the beige, knee-length classic with the famous check cotton lining. This model can be combined with anything and everything. Whether you prefer wearing it with stilettos or brogues, the coat is a feast for the eyes. From sprinting through the rain to sitting high and dry in the car, the trench coat lets you get from A to B in style.
