Essential item: aviator sunglasses

Sunglasses come in all shapes and sizes, but there is one style that remains a timeless favourite. Aviator sunglasses never go out of fashion and, apart from being classy, they also offer excellent protection for your eyes, making them a real must-have for any occasion

We’re familiar with aviator sunglasses from all the celebrities who swear by them, yet they were designed around 1936 for American military pilots. That is why they are popularly referred to as pilot glasses. Bausch & Lomb developed the style and renamed them Ray-Bans.

Pilot glasses became known to the public at large when a newspaper picture showed General Douglas MacArthur wearing aviator sunglasses during a beach landing in the Philippines in the Second World War. In no time at all, American soldiers could often be seen donning these frames. The French armed forces soon followed the style, too.

These classic shades were by no means only worn by the military for long. Film and rock stars have often been spotted wearing aviators over the years, including Paul McCartney, Freddie Mercury and Ringo Starr. The sunglasses also became iconic in films such as Top Gun and Cobra, in which superstars Tom Cruise and Sylvester Stallone respectively wore them. And once celebrities are convinced, others are quick to follow.

Ray-Ban Aviators are characterised by teardrop-shaped lenses and a thin metal frame. Apart from being non-gender specific, aviator sunglasses also go perfectly with any clothing style so it’s not surprising that these glasses have become more and more popular since the 60s.

Classic Ray-Ban Aviators have a silver frame with black lenses or a gold frame with dark green lenses but the brand now offers a wide range of variations. When it comes to sunglasses, the biggest hit this summer is a Ray-Ban Aviator styled with coloured reflective lenses. The young may primarily embrace the colourful trend, but the standard model is popular with people of all ages.
